Write Now!

I have just finished writing three articles on helps for writing an autobiography: Getting Started, Autobiography Characteristics, and the importance of writing your autobiography.

Remember: Writing is most important!

Start now.

Don't get caught up on the mechanics. Those will come as you write.

Write.

But what should you write about?

Here are some helps:

The time you forgot your lines just before your cue in your theatrical debut.

Your first boyfriend or girlfriend.

Your favorite high school teacher.

Who did you sit next to in homeroom? What was that person like? Were you friends?

Lessons learned. Life's short, do something worthwhile. Work stinks, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Life's a crap sandwich and everyday you have to take a bite.

The number of times you've been in the hospital.

Heroes. Your dad. Your mom. A teacher. A friend.

Your family vacations. What did you do on the long road trips? Did you play games? Read books? Sing songs?

Holidays. How did you spend your Christmas' growing up? What was your favorite Halloween costume?

First time you danced with someone besides a family member. Was your mom at the dance to chaperone?

Just start writing. Things will fall into place.

Don't freeze in the face of writing something. Forget the conventions and write.

You have to have rules. If we didn't, no one would write anything that anyone could read. Think of the rules more as guidelines. A map as you will. You know where you're headed. There are a bunch of ways to get there.

Write as you speak. People often tell me that I write like I speak. This is a good thing because my personality can shine through.

Is spelling not your forte? I used to be a great speller. The word processor has broken me of that habit. I rely on the spell checker to keep me straight.

Your first reader is you. Don't be too critical.

You have to be willing to write poorly at first. Nobody spews perfect prose onto the paper. Good writing is struggled over. Great writing is excruciating. Start poorly.

Readers value honesty and integrity over perfection. In fact, most readers like to see little imperfections in a writer. It makes them human.

Writer's block? Make a list. Like the one above. Your writing block will soon be gone.

What are you waiting for? There's much to write.
