Australia's Biggest Issue - Housing

Anyone who lives in a major Australian city doesn't have to be shown the statistics from economists that Australians have some of the highest housing costs in the world, they already know. Its not just the crazy prices of buying a new house, rentals costs are also exploding.

To buy a house in any major Australian City now costs about $400,000. Even building your own it now beyond the reach of many. Land costs have exploded. This is ironic in a land that has the lowest people to land ratio in the world bar Antarctica. There is lots of land. The problem is the government and land developers ensure only small parcels are released over a period of time. That with excessive government taxes ensure that land prices continue to explode. The average state and federal government taxes exceed $50,000. Although this greatly increases budget surpluses it does nothing for the average Australian family other than commit them to even longer slavery at the hands of mortgages and banks, if they ever succeed in paying them off at all.

The Australian government has for a long time avoided its responsibility to the Australian people to provide affordable housing. This is a disgrace. The government has instead pretended market forces will solve all problems. They won't - unless your happy with citizens living in the streets. They have allowed negative gearing where landlords can claim the costs of housing against income believing this will help increase rental availability. I believe all this has achieved is raise the average cost of a house with the haves and haves not being even more clearly defined.

Many people complain that government housing means automatic slums. This has often been the case in the past. This is because the lowest rungs of society got first pick. I proposed a different solution to the government that is prepared to kill political correctness in favor of the general good. Build large amounts of government housing but only allow WORKING people to buy or rent the housing. NO persons in receipt of a government benefit - other than AGED pensioners over 65. Further ensure the class of these new suburbs by refusing to allow anyone to rent or buy who has a criminal history. At least this will give young people encouragement to be law abiding citizens.

This approach will even help the poor by bringing down the average cost of housing. But which Australian political party has the courage to really help the average Australian? The liberal party won't betray "market forces" and the labour party would not have the strength to ignore the poor in favor of the middle class.

When will we have a truly democratic system that provides good housing to the middle class?!
