The coming rugby world cup.
In my review of the 2007 Super 14 season I made a number of predictions. Most of these prove right although - the South Africans teams did better than expected, the New Zealand teams were strong but failed in the finals, and the Australian teams did much worse than expected.
This is important when considering the coming Rugby World Cup. Traditionally the Southern Hemisphere has dominated the Rugby World Cup - South Africa, Australia and New Zealand have all lifted the trophy with only England as the sole Northern team to lift the trophy. That's why the Super 14 Rugby is important in considering who has the best chance to lift the golden trophy.
Firstly New Zealand continues to have the largest pool of Rugby talent at a high standard however they have a rep. of being chokers when it matters. The 2007 Super 14 season was no different. In the finals both Canterbury and Auckland played a sub-standard performance. They looked worn out and obviously the trip to South Africa revealed some stamina weaknesses. This is a worry for the world cup as it is the finals where it counts. New Zealand will be favorites, but it will be mental toughness that will win them the world cup.
South Africa is looking the goods for the coming world cup. If selecting on form the South African team will be good, strong and now with some good back line flare as well. I expect South Africa to do well in the Rugby World Cup.
Australian teams had a disastrous super 14. The Reds were pathetic, NSW was little better. Only the Force and the ACT showed any form at all and both still missed out on the finals. With injuries and retirements to key players the Wallabies team is not looking good on form. Although previous Australian teams have come good in the tournament I don't Australia has the depth require to succeed at the world cup this time around. I think it will prove to be a disappointing season for the Wallabies with a chance for a major shuffle in the team and introduction of lots of fresh blood to build for the future and maybe lift the trophy in four years time.
My prediction for the coming world cup - either NZ or SA will lift the trophy.
